The River Oaks Theater: The Second Act

A little over a year ago, the River Oaks Theater shuttered for good, or so it seemed. There was a hefty community movement to halt the proceedings, but it all was - apparently - for naught.

However, there were stirrings in the metaphorical ashes. 


Thanks to Star Cinema Grill, it appears that the theater will rise again. That I can figure out, this is their first acquisition inside Houston’s Loop. If the new venture follows suit, patrons will have some mighty fine dining options as well as first run films. My assumption (well, my hope) is that these will trend toward smaller, independent films to answer that need.


The River Oaks Theater still has a page up and a sign-up for notifications. My guess is that there is an administrator for the page in contact with (or employed by?) Star Cinema Grill.

The Last Whodunnit: “Knives Out”

I’ve seen all of Rian Johnson’s theatrical releases. That’s more than I can say of many directors whose work I’m fond of. It helps that he only has five, but each one is almost perfectly crafted. That includes the somewhat divisive “The Last Jedi”, but “Brick”, “The Brothers Bloom”, “Looper”, and the aforementioned addition to the Star Wars canon are all compelling stories, well-written, and often, immersive experiences. I will be the first to admit that I have never solved a murder mystery. I love the genre in literature and film, but not only have I never solved one, I can’t imagine writing one. I tried once. It was wretched. And shit. It was shit. But “Knives Out” is not shit. It is the farthest thing from shit. It is a percolating stew of family dissonance and antipathy. It is a drawing room drama. It is donut with a hole filled by another donut with a hole in it. It boasts some of the tightest performances in a mainstream film with mainly entertainment on its mind.

The Zone of Interest and Anselm - The Banality of Evil and the Battle Against Forgetting

In Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest , the Holocaust is taking place literally over the garden walls. Auschwitz is Rudolf Höss's next door neighbor, but you wouldn't know it from the normality of routine his family goes through. His wife is happy with their lot (both their social status and the land they live on), the kids go to school, there are backyard parties, and he goes to the office each day to continue fine-tuning the extinction of Jews and other undesirables as dictated by his boss. He also ensures that quotas are met and later we find he's due to be moved in a promotion over all the camps. This is how chillingly matter-of-fact Glazer's narrative is. If you remove the context, you would have a fairly typical and maybe even boring, domestic drama. You might even have some sympathy of both Höss and his wife and the disruption that a move might bring to the family. But their obliviousness to the very real evil that they are abetting and helping spread dem

It's that time again: Oscar Season! And the Best Picture is....

The Little Gold Guy is back... Honestly, I don't care. I've had a general antipathy toward the Academy Awards for decades, ever since Raging Bull was passed over for Best Picture for Ordinary People (which is, of course, a very good film; no flies on it, but Scorsese's masterwork was a leap forward in depth of narrative, use of film grammar, and is simply a towering masterpiece of cinema).  I also have a dim view of most of the nominees in any given year. Last year was brilliant, with Everything Everywhere All at Once raising the bar for what can be honored by AMPAS. This year, I'm more intrigued; it's been a good while since every entry is a remarkable work and in half the cases, An Important Film. I think I'd be good with just about any of them winning. I've already covered Past Lives , Poor Things ,  The Zone of Interest , The Holdovers , Killers of the Flower Moon , Barbie , and Oppenheimer ; I'm remiss that I haven't given the rest their due,
