Short Takes: “Disorder in the Court” (1936)

Why I oughtta...

"Disorder in the Court" from 1936 is primo Moe, Larry, and Curly. More anarchic than the Marx Brothers, if less subtle and intellectual, the Stooges were marvels of chaos.

There was no social commentary in this outing as they provided musical mayhem as testimony to clear Gail Tempest (Suzanne Kaaren, who was in some other shorts with the boys and in a couple of my favorite flicks from the thirties). Long story short, it's funny as heck and there's not much more to say except that it's a great example of the Stooges at their best.

Osgood Perkins' Longlegs is a near masterpiece. Yes, in summary it sounds like a Silence of the Lambs riff/homage/rip-off, but it's far different. If anything, it's very much more of what Demme's film would be if David Lynch directed instead. That might feel reductive and unfair to Perkins who is proving himself to be a singular voice in the psychological or just plain horror genre, but it's really not. Lynch's influence has pervaded a couple of generations of filmmakers by now and while it's fun to play "spot the Lynch", it's more useful to see how that influence is repurposed and reinvented. Here, Perkins pulls away from the mostly visual impact of Lynch's work and opts for working with sound design to set the tone the movie overall.  I don't see anything in sound desinger Eugenio Battaglia's filmography that points to much that could be shared with Lynchian sonics, so I'm assuming that Perkins had very specific ideas about ...

The Substance is substantial

It’s not subtle, but Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is blunt confrontation with the pressures put on women to remain youthful, vibrant, and alluring. I want to stretch the sentence longer by appending “for the cis-het male gaze” instead of the other qualifier tha tends to get overused - “society’s pressures”. But there’s the rub that Fargeat’s keeps at; she could be making a visceral argument that it is the dominant male thrust, so to speak, that drives society and therefore, society can’t be easily untethered from masculine influence. From there, the thesis develops that women are not only objects of but also unwittingly complicit in those societal pressures. Every year, we hope that something will change and there will be less emphasis on looks and maintaining appearances, but that doesn’t seem to be happening too readily. Halloween Lovecraft! We begin with “The Colour Out of Space”

“ West of Arkham the hills rise wild, and there are valleys with deep woods that no axe has ever cut. There are dark narrow glens where the trees slope fantastically, and where thin brooklets trickle without ever having caught the glint of sunlight.” The Colour Out of Space, Lovecraft’s 1927 short story has been adapted as a feature five times, I believe. Equally as much if not more so as a short film or a TV adaptation. It is likely his most highly regarded short work and one he himself favored.  It’s easy to see why. There is a pervasive sense of dread that grows in the telling and an even worse sense of how little human beings matter in a universe where a meteorite can just land in someone’s backyard, bringing with it blight, pestilence, and madness. Each of the films I’ve watched has something to commend them. The 1965 American International Pictures’ Die, Monster, Die! is a nice try.
