Short Takes: “Disorder in the Court” (1936)

Why I oughtta...

"Disorder in the Court" from 1936 is primo Moe, Larry, and Curly. More anarchic than the Marx Brothers, if less subtle and intellectual, the Stooges were marvels of chaos.

There was no social commentary in this outing as they provided musical mayhem as testimony to clear Gail Tempest (Suzanne Kaaren, who was in some other shorts with the boys and in a couple of my favorite flicks from the thirties). Long story short, it's funny as heck and there's not much more to say except that it's a great example of the Stooges at their best.

This failure unquestionably affected Hitchcock. There is something paradoxical about the fact that this popular film director  never managed to get his most daring, his most candid, works  accepted. The failure of Rich and Strange, like the later failure of Under Capricorn, undoubtedly prevented him from continuing along a path that he nevertheless knew was promising. Remake/Remodel/Revision: "Barbie" (2023)

Out of the gate, when I first heard Amy Schumer was working on a Barbie movie, I leaped ahead trying to wrap my mind around the bits that Schumer would frame. There'd be plenty of innuendo, some shrewd observational and slapstick comedy, and likely, a sure thread of subversion throughout. What I couldn't figure out is what would drive the plot? A Barbie come to life like some out of control mecha? An Ex Machina with Barbie in place of Eva?  Then the project halted as Schumer and Warners parted company over creative differences. Then, Greta Gerwig's name shows up attached to the project. And Noah Baumbach. And Margot Robbie. And Ryan Gosling and before long it sounded like someone's idea of an artists' loft party gone out of control. And all of it somehow involving the IP of one of the most reviled and/or lauded products from Mattel. The First Great Film of 2023: Past Lives

  " Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future,  And time future contained in time past. " (1) At the end of Celine Song's remarkable film Past Lives , Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) wonders if he and Na, now Nora, Young (Greta Lee, who deserves a Best Actress nomination right now) are together in a future at this very moment. A running thread throughout the story is very much about the roads we go down, the relationships we start but never quite conclude, and the paths not taken. Song takes the Korean term inyeon/ 인연 as the thematic underpinning that provides layer upon layer of tension between the possibilities of the past faded into the actuality of the present.  Inyeon is translated as "encounter" but it has more nuance than that might imply(2).
