Short Takes: “Disorder in the Court” (1936)

Why I oughtta...

"Disorder in the Court" from 1936 is primo Moe, Larry, and Curly. More anarchic than the Marx Brothers, if less subtle and intellectual, the Stooges were marvels of chaos.

There was no social commentary in this outing as they provided musical mayhem as testimony to clear Gail Tempest (Suzanne Kaaren, who was in some other shorts with the boys and in a couple of my favorite flicks from the thirties). Long story short, it's funny as heck and there's not much more to say except that it's a great example of the Stooges at their best.

In Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest , the Holocaust is taking place literally over the garden walls. Auschwitz is Rudolf Höss's next door neighbor, but you wouldn't know it from the normality of routine his family goes through. His wife is happy with their lot (both their social status and the land they live on), the kids go to school, there are backyard parties, and he goes to the office each day to continue fine-tuning the extinction of Jews and other undesirables as dictated by his boss. He also ensures that quotas are met and later we find he's due to be moved in a promotion over all the camps. This is how chillingly matter-of-fact Glazer's narrative is. If you remove the context, you would have a fairly typical and maybe even boring, domestic drama. You might even have some sympathy of both Höss and his wife and the disruption that a move might bring to the family. The Last Whodunnit: “Knives Out”

I’ve seen all of Rian Johnson’s theatrical releases. That’s more than I can say of many directors whose work I’m fond of. It helps that he only has five, but each one is almost perfectly crafted. That includes the somewhat divisive “The Last Jedi”, but “Brick”, “The Brothers Bloom”, “Looper”, and the aforementioned addition to the Star Wars canon are all compelling stories, well-written, and often, immersive experiences. I will be the first to admit that I have never solved a murder mystery. I love the genre in literature and film, but not only have I never solved one, I can’t imagine writing one. I tried once. It was wretched. And shit. It was shit. But “Knives Out” is not shit. It is the farthest thing from shit. It is a percolating stew of family dissonance and antipathy. It is a drawing room drama. It is donut with a hole filled by another donut with a hole in it. It boasts some of the tightest performances in a mainstream film with mainly entertainment on its mind. ...

Longlegs strides across your nightmare

Osgood Perkins' Longlegs is a near masterpiece. Yes, in summary it sounds like a Silence of the Lambs riff/homage/rip-off, but it's far different. If anything, it's very much more of what Demme's film would be if David Lynch directed instead. That might feel reductive and unfair to Perkins who is proving himself to be a singular voice in the psychological or just plain horror genre, but it's really not. Lynch's influence has pervaded a couple of generations of filmmakers by now and while it's fun to play "spot the Lynch", it's more useful to see how that influence is repurposed and reinvented. Here, Perkins pulls away from the mostly visual impact of Lynch's work and opts for working with sound design to set the tone the movie overall.  I don't see anything in sound desinger Eugenio Battaglia's filmography that points to much that could be shared with Lynchian sonics, so I'm assuming that Perkins had very specific ideas about ...
