A Franchise Ending with Grace and the classiest of fan service: Downton Abbey: the Grand Finale

Fantastic. Four: First Steps ,   Superman ,   Downton Abbey: the Grand Finale . One of these is not like the other two. The last is, of course, a franchise that has had the good sense and grace to finally call it a day. I’m a fan, but I applaud Julian Fellowes’ wrapping up the saga with a fan-service filled film. Take that, alliteration! To be clear, this last goodbye is very much for the fan base in a way that the previous films were not (and were stronger movies because of it). While Downton Abbey and Downton Abbey: a New Era were continuations of the series, they could very well stand on their own as movies and a newcomer would be no worse for wear. The Grand Finale , however, is replete with callbacks and obscurities that might baffle, if not distract, the casual viewer, but for those of us who have followed the Crawleys and the Granthams this far, it was as close to a hoot as their tale gets and you better believe, I wept like a baby at the end.  There are no big d...

Batman! Hundreds of Beavers! The End.

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! Well, yesterday was…. I treated myself to Batman: Caped Crusader and Hundreds of Beavers. Loved Batman and how could I not? I don’t think this is a hot take, but I do think I prefer the animated series to the live action adaptations. Actually, let me rephrase that. I prefer them to the Nolan and Snyder variations. Burton got it. Reeves got it. And by “it”, I man the absurdity of a billionaire dressed up in a latex bat-suit jacked to the max, and capable of all kinds of vigilante action. Don’t get me wrong; I love the Nolan/Bale Bats! I really do. But in many ways, they’re the least comic book-y of all the adaptations. Snyder’s is just too leaden to take too seriously, though I actually like Affleck in the role; old, dead inside, you know, Bruce after having done this stuff for too long.  In any event, Bruce Timm and friends did good, is what I’m saying. I generally steer away from reviews of films I’m going to see unless I really don’t care about them or have much of a stake in them. Most of the MCU releases have been like that and it’s 50/50 split on whether I’ll like them or not. Loved - really did - Marvels . Didn’t care for, at all, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania . Actually., rather liked Eternals , really didn’t like Thor : Love and Thunder. And while it was bloated, there was much that was admirable and near-great in Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever . I feel like I”m forgetting some, but I can’t be bothered to comb my memory. Captain America: Brave New World was middling. I didn’t dislike it as much as many, but if it was titled The Incredible Hulk 2 , I wouldn’t have blinked. Thunderbolts* ? Really enjoyed it. I’m a mark for Florence Pugh and Yelena Belova is one of the more interesting characters to come out of Marvel post-Endgame.
