Hey! I took a vacation, too! (No. No, I did not.) It is increasingly difficult to write about entertainment these days, but I think it’s important to. It’s not a matter of distraction with bread and circuses (we have state-sanctioned media for that); the arts are what can sustain us at the highest and best levels, spiritually. The Horror Films We Need or the Ones We Deserve? "Eddington" and "Weapons"

  NOTE: SPOILERS ON TOP OF SPOILERS FOR EDDINGTON AND WEAPONS! Don’t read any further unless you don’t care or aren’t going to see the movies or are going to but don’t like surprises (really, you should see these films cold and then circle back with me later.) 2025 has dealt us some compelling films in the horror or horror adjacent genre. Companion , Heart Eyes , Sinners , The Monkey , Eddington , and Weapons come to mind right off the bat. It’s the last two that have been sticking with me the most and not just because they are the most recently watched. Both are jam-packed with ideas, both are told masterfully, intelligently, and both have subtexts that don’t necessarily beat you over the head because the drama unfolding onscreen is so gripping. I find both refreshing because they act as sort of course corrections for much of what has been referred to as “elevated horror”; genre pieces that employ narrative and narrative tropes to interrogate fairly meaty, if not profound themes....

The Breakthrough: The Toll of the Sea (1922)

No matter how often I watch Anna May Wong in her first starring role, no matter how much I prepare myself for the, let’s face it, racism, and no matter how much I say “it was a different time” (I refuse to say that’s an adequate excuse), I find myself both moved by AMW’s performance in itself, but also, for what it represents in the broader scheme of her career. It’s a tough little film.  Essentially, it’s   Madame Butterfly   transposed to China, but without the “hero” realizing he’d made a mistake and that he truly loved Butterfly, or in this case, “Lotus Flower.” No, Allen Carver here is a dolt whose wife pushes him to see Lotus Flower and clear things up. Let’s be clear; there are so many things wrong and not to just 21st century eyes about this film (and for that matter, Puccini’s opera, and the source material before it).
