Over on another blog, I post a bi-weekly gallery of memes of a distinctly political bent. Today, over at Bluesky, a couple of users have hosted a virtual holodeck of a party in celebration of the storied franchise and I wasn’t going to descend to the depths of punning like everyone else.

I did my MCU duty. “Captain America: Brave New World”, a slog of missed opportunities and dumb motivations

  …but not exactly “good”.  My expectations grew lower and lower each time I saw a preview. This could have been a course correction of sorts for Marvel, but as it was, we are left with a hodge-podge of undeveloped ideas and a plot that only serves to tie up threads dangling from a forgotten entry in the series first phase.  I wasted till. Now to see this because I really am that apathetic about the whole enterprise, but I really like Anthony Mackie as an actor and his take on Sam Wilson. Harrison Ford is going to get my ass in the seat, and - at least, originally - I was on board since it seemed the filmmakers were going for a Captain America: The Winter Soldier direction.  Of course, Mackie and Ford elevated the material, but the script is such a collage of moments and attempts to gin up a sense of high stakes but executed so haphazardly, if not disinterestedly, that I found myself shrugging my shoulders internally.  To recap the plot this lackluster bores me...

The Horror Films We Need or the Ones We Deserve? "Eddington" and "Weapons"

  NOTE: SPOILERS ON TOP OF SPOILERS FOR EDDINGTON AND WEAPONS! Don’t read any further unless you don’t care or aren’t going to see the movies or are going to but don’t like surprises (really, you should see these films cold and then circle back with me later.) 2025 has dealt us some compelling films in the horror or horror adjacent genre. Companion , Heart Eyes , Sinners , The Monkey , Eddington , and Weapons come to mind right off the bat. It’s the last two that have been sticking with me the most and not just because they are the most recently watched. Both are jam-packed with ideas, both are told masterfully, intelligently, and both have subtexts that don’t necessarily beat you over the head because the drama unfolding onscreen is so gripping. I find both refreshing because they act as sort of course corrections for much of what has been referred to as “elevated horror”; genre pieces that employ narrative and narrative tropes to interrogate fairly meaty, if not profound themes....

Slumming/'tis the Season: Mesa of Lost Women!

Every so often, you see a movie that is just, there’s no other way to put it, bad. It’s a wretched non-construct of script, acting, and direction. Every so often, you come across one, though, that calls you to question if that’s not the very point of the film.  I love - that's right: love -  Mesa of Lost Women . It is deliriously bad. And yet, and yet, if you venture into it with the right approach, it can prove to be a challenging work of avant-garde cinema, interrogating plot structure, characters, the passage of time, and interspecies/environmental relationships. Does that sound like a stretch? You bet it does! But look what happens when we take that approach. C’mon down!
