Welcome to Reaction Shots!

Reaction Shots grew out of necessity and consideration for others. Emails that go on forever with detailed analyses of movies and lengthy consideration of genres, themes, and personalities get kind of old, right?

My excuse is that I was habituated early on to late night discussions of films in cafes and bars. Plus, a lot of us were prone to read articles by and interviews with directors and writers like Bergman and Truffaut at the time and even entertain some of the gratuitously masturbatory material of various critics, while we ourselves, of course, could never be accused of anything so crass. Perish the muthafuggin’ thought.

Over the past couple of years, I decided that it was time to foist this stuff on the unsuspecting on a broader platform and to that end, put together the fine organ of cinema exploration before you.

More than a few people have suggested that owing to the amount of time I put into this (research for longer form essays/analyses and renting and actually going to flicks), I might consider hanging out a shingle/extending a cup for donations/tips/gratuities/coffee. I am not averse to that idea and it gives people a literal buy-in and a way of hiring someone to look at and research something for them (though do give credit if you use anything on this site).

Yep, I have a Patreon page. The basic idea is that, if you like, you can subscribe or if you’d rather, you can just buy some RS swag there (or pick up some art). Or, even better, you can pay to say, “Dance, monkey!”

The basic structure is that I’m happy to trundle out a piece of 2,000 words or more for $20 or a series of three for $50. Anything more than that is open for discussion and we can do that via email at myreactionshots@gmail.com.

You can also send a tip - in whatever amount - directly to my PayPal account (thankyouverymuch!)

Or simply feel free to read for gratis and comment! Always happy to hear what other people think of what we see on the screen, of an auteur’s vision, or a performer’s performance.

There’s a lot more content coming down the pike and I welcome one and all to read along and share their thoughts and experiences. I really, really want to say “See you at the movies!” But that’s such a cliché and it’s been used before…

Oh, who am I kidding?

SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES!
